Sasaki’s “Forest City” Master Plan in Iskandar Malaysia
Sasaki Associates has designed the “Forest City,” a sprawling development spanning four man-made islands in Iskandar Malaysia. This ambitious project, with an estimated investment of S$58.3 billion (US$40.9 billion), aims to become the largest mixed-use green development in Southeast Asia, projected to generate around 220,000 job opportunities.
Strategic Location and Economic Potential
Strategically situated near the economic hubs of Southeast Asia, the Forest City is poised to emerge as a vibrant center for commerce and culture. Emphasizing a live/work culture, the master plan envisions a diverse array of establishments, including financial institutions, high-tech research and development facilities, corporate headquarters, and creative industries. This blend aims to foster innovation and sustainable employment opportunities for the region.
Development Strategy
The development strategy of Forest City emphasizes a mixed-use, walkable approach while fostering a symbiotic relationship between built and natural environments. Connectivity is ensured with planned light rail and ferry systems linking the development to wider transit networks extending into Singapore and Malaysia.
Environmental Preservation and Restoration
Acknowledging the significance of preserving the area’s delicate ecosystem and supporting the local fishing industry, the design integrates natural coastal ecologies into the development. This includes the restoration of over nine kilometers of mangroves, creation of 10 kilometers of shallow coves and mudflats, and protection of 250 hectares of shallow-water seagrass. These efforts not only maintain ecological sustainability but also enhance resilience against sea-level rise.
Green Infrastructure and Public Realm
A distinctive feature of Forest City is its extensive green infrastructure, highlighted by a rooftop network of interconnected parks and gardens. This innovative approach creates the world’s largest green roof system, providing natural habitats, stormwater filtration, and recreational spaces free from vehicular traffic. Additionally, the development prioritizes pedestrian-friendly designs and offers diverse transit options, with transit centers strategically located around civic areas.
Vision for Sustainable Urban Living
Forest City’s overarching vision aims to attract a diverse and international population seeking sustainable urban living. Beyond its iconic skyline, the development focuses on enriching residents’ daily lives with a variety of housing options and cultural amenities, creating a vibrant and inclusive community.
