Located in Urríes, Spain, the Ruesta Urban Center stands as a poignant reminder of a bygone era, marked by the displacement of inhabitants in the 1960s due to the construction of the Yesa reservoir. Despite its obscurity, Ruesta boasts a significant heritage, including architectural landmarks and its historical association with the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route.

Preservation Efforts

In response to the imminent risk of collapse faced by the buildings along the Camino de Santiago, the Ebro Hydrographic Confederation entrusted the task of restoration to Sebastián Arquitectos in 2017. Tasked with formulating a Master Plan for Ruesta’s recovery, the project aimed to halt the decay of the urban fabric and preserve the town’s cultural legacy. Through meticulous planning and collaborative efforts, the restoration initiative sought to revive Ruesta as a vibrant hub for former residents, visitors, and pilgrims alike.

Implementation and Outcomes

Following the completion of restoration works, several houses in Centro St. have been repurposed to serve as an innovative urban camping area adjacent to the pilgrims’ hostel. This adaptive reuse, a direct outcome of the Master Plan, not only ensures structural stability but also breathes new life into the community fabric.
