Redesigning Phoenix’s Hance Park: A Vibrant Cultural Hub

Transforming Urban Space

Phoenix, Arizona is set to undergo a remarkable transformation as the city embarks on redesigning its 32-acre downtown urban park into a dynamic cultural center. Spearheaded by New York’s !melk and locally-based WEDDLE GILMORE black rock studio, the recently-approved masterplan promises to breathe new life into Hance Park.

The Visionary Masterplan

The masterplan, which emerged victorious in a competition, spans over half a mile of U.S. Interstate Highway 10. Divided into three distinct programmatic spaces—valley, canyon, and plateau—the park will offer a range of experiences for visitors. The valley, featuring green hills, will serve as a neighborhood commons, while the bustling plaza in the canyon will cater to urban activities and food vendors. The plateau, designed for large community events, will be adjacent to the Phoenix Center for the Arts.

Blending Nature and Architecture

Central to the design are large, structural forms inspired by Phoenix’s buttes, which define each space and create a microclimate within the park. Complemented by lush landscaping, including shade-providing plants and natural partitions, the park aims to offer respite from the desert sun while promoting sustainability through water capture and energy-efficient irrigation techniques.

Innovative Shade Solutions

One of the park’s most striking features is the installation of large cloud-like screens suspended over key areas, such as the Central Avenue bridge. Not only will these screens serve as iconic markers for the park, but they will also provide additional shade, enhancing the visitor experience and offering relief from the intense Arizona sun.

Phased Development Approach

Initial construction will focus on renovating the canyon section and Central Avenue entrances, with development progressing outward in phases. This phased approach ensures that the park remains accessible and functional throughout the transformation process, gradually unveiling its vibrant new identity to the city of Phoenix.
