Uttarkashi Tunnel Collapse: Rescue Efforts in Critical Phase

The rescue operation for 41 workers trapped inside the Silkyara tunnel in Uttarkashi has entered a critical stage as medical equipment arrived at the site on the 12th day of the operation. The workers have been stuck since November 12, following the collapse of the under-construction tunnel from Silkyara to Barkot.

Progress and Expectations

Officials overseeing the operation have expressed optimism that the workers will be successfully rescued today. Efforts to clear the debris blocking the tunnel have been ongoing, with rescue teams working tirelessly to bridge the gap between them and the trapped workers. As of the latest update, approximately 10 meters of debris remain to be cleared.

Operational Challenges

The rescue operation involves drilling through the debris to create pathways for the workers to exit safely. Despite challenges such as encountering metal obstructions, the teams are utilizing an auger machine capable of drilling through about 3 meters of debris per hour. The arrival of medical equipment and oxygen cylinders further enhances the capabilities of the rescue teams.

Medical Care and Support

A 41-bed hospital has been set up at the Community Health Centre in Chinyalisaur to provide immediate medical examination and care to the rescued workers. Upon evacuation from the tunnel, the workers will undergo a detailed medical assessment to ensure their well-being.

Collaborative Efforts

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel are actively involved in the rescue operation, providing essential support and resources to aid in the evacuation process. The coordinated efforts of multiple agencies and rescue teams signify a unified approach towards achieving a successful outcome.

Safety Measures in the Tunnel

The portion of the tunnel where the workers are trapped measures 8.5 meters in height and spans 2 kilometers in length. Despite the challenging circumstances, the built-up portion of the tunnel provides safety features such as electricity and water supply, ensuring a conducive environment for the trapped laborers.

As the rescue operation progresses and medical facilities are put in place, the collective focus remains on the swift and safe evacuation of all trapped workers. The collaborative efforts, technical expertise, and logistical support are instrumental in navigating the challenges posed by the tunnel collapse incident in Uttarkashi.
