Café Výklad A Restoration by Grau Architects

Situated in Banská Bystrica, Café Výklad occupies the ground floor of a historically significant house that has undergone several renovations over time. The latest refurbishment aimed to restore the original proportions of the space, accentuating the archetypal qualities of the building while introducing contemporary elements.

Embracing Natural Light

True to its name, Café Výklad features large glazed openings or showcases that flood the interior with natural light. Each showcase offers a unique atmosphere, drawing pedestrians from the street. From a glass-concrete bar to a central neon logo and a green oasis, these showcases create distinct focal points within the café.

Symmetrical Elegance

The design maintains symmetry and balance throughout, with suspended aluminum lamps adding a touch of burgundy hue. These chandeliers, inspired by the historical context, establish patterns that echo throughout the space. Original features such as layered walls and ceilings are preserved, highlighting the evolution of time with a raw and authentic character.

Softness and Contrast

A pink-tinted concrete floor screed adds softness to the interior, juxtaposed with refurbished old furniture and new pieces crafted from bleached beech plywood. The toilets retain their original design, painted in burgundy and adorned with illustrations and spatial objects by designer Emil Taschka, enhancing the visual appeal.

Illuminating Ambiance

Interior lighting plays a crucial role, offering various intensities and principles of light to enrich the café’s ambiance. The space is adorned with paintings by artists David and Marta Javorsky, adding a layer of artistic flair to the overall design.

In essence, Café Výklad by Grau Architects is a harmonious blend of historical restoration and contemporary design. By preserving the building’s heritage while infusing modern elements, the café offers a captivating space where patrons can enjoy both the past and the present.
