Artistic Abode: Exploring the Ocarina House

A Fusion of Living and Art

The Ocarina House, designed by LCLA Office, is a testament to the seamless integration of art and living space. Situated amidst the serene countryside, this compact 40 square meter residence doubles as both a home and an artist’s gallery. Catering to the needs of its inhabitant, an artist by profession, the space effortlessly transitions between living quarters, exhibition areas, and workspaces.

Embracing Tradition and Craftsmanship

Perched at an altitude of 2100 meters above sea level, the house is nestled on a sloping plot in a region renowned for its pottery and clay craftsmanship. The structure, partially sunken into the earth, is constructed predominantly of brick, skillfully avoiding the need for extensive concrete foundations in an earthquake-prone zone. This innovative design choice not only ensures stability but also pays homage to the rich tradition of clay craftsmanship prevalent in the area.

Harmonizing with Nature

A key feature of the Ocarina House is its integration with the natural landscape. Rainwater collected from the roof nourishes a lush wet garden enveloping the residence, blurring the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces. Additionally, a unique structural element not only stabilizes the building but also serves as a conduit for watering the verdant garden, fostering a symbiotic relationship between architecture and nature.

Bridging Old and New

The new structure seamlessly connects with the existing studio through a carefully crafted pathway carved into the hillside. Constructed using the same locally sourced brick, this pathway serves as a symbolic link between the past and the present, honoring the site’s history while embracing contemporary design principles.

Cultivating Future Growth

The surrounding landscape, meticulously planted with trees in anticipation of the house, continues to evolve alongside the structure. Young trees, aligned with the house’s roofline, promise to mature into a vibrant canopy, creating a striking contrast against the backdrop of the agricultural landscape.

Conclusion

In essence, the Ocarina House stands as a testament to the harmonious coexistence of art, architecture, and nature. From its innovative design approach to its seamless integration with the surrounding landscape, every aspect of this residence reflects a deep appreciation for tradition, craftsmanship, and the inherent beauty of the natural world.
