Kerala Health Department’s Alert on Zika Virus Outbreak
In response to the Zika virus outbreak in Thalassery, the northern Kannur district of Kerala, the state’s health department has issued a directive urging the public to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions.
Symptoms and Vigilance
The department emphasized the importance of recognizing symptoms such as fever, headache, body pain, joint pain, and red eyes, urging people to promptly report these symptoms to healthcare workers for immediate attention.
Special Attention for Patients
Healthcare providers were instructed to give special attention to patients exhibiting Zika virus symptoms. A high-level meeting chaired by Health Minister Veena George reviewed the Zika virus cases in Thalassery, where eight cases have been confirmed so far.
Risks for Pregnant Women
Of particular concern are pregnant women, as Zika virus infection during pregnancy can lead to birth defects like microcephaly in the unborn baby. Pregnant women in areas with reported Zika cases are advised to undergo special monitoring and examinations.
Transmission and Preventive Measures
While the primary mode of Zika virus transmission is through the Aedes mosquito, the department highlighted that transmission can also occur through blood donation and sexual contact. To curb the spread, the department urged intensified activities related to mosquito breeding control and fogging.
Preventive Actions in Kannur District
In addition to healthcare measures, the department directed schools, households, and institutions in Kannur district to observe dry days on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday to prevent mosquito breeding, emphasizing the importance of community-wide efforts to combat the outbreak.
